BMW N54 ANDROID ENGINE TUNING

The BMW N54 is a direct injection turbocharged straight-6 DOHC engine primarily seen in the BMW "35i" range of cars such as the 135i, 335i and 535i. The N54 has won five straight International Engine of the Year awards, and three straight Ward's 10 Best Engines awards. The N54 was slowly phased out of production circa 2009 and replaced with the newer N55.

However, the N54 still remains popular in the tuning industry due to the amount of power it can produce with some simple bolt on mods and ECU tuning. MHD is one of those companies which has taken on the tuning game by creating a flash via an Android handheld application. The MHD Flasher reveals power BMW left on the table with the N54 while still retaining the OEM ECU.

It also provides a number of other benefits such as being able to monitor your engine behaviour using a configurable gauges layout to keep on eye on any of the 50+ engine monitors like oil temp, boost pressure, actual load or individual cylinder ignition timing. You can activate the logging mode to save up to 30 monitors to a standard CSV or read error codes and store them for analysis. MHD also provides custom tuning support for those who have special requirements. In addition, the ECU can be flashed back to a stock at anytime, as often as you need to. No ECU backup is required.

To run the flash, connect any compatible Android device to your car using a standard K+DCAN cable along with a OTG USB cable, install one of the pre-purchased MHD built-in maps. So whats required to do an "Android" flash? We'll run through the equipment and steps below. Simply click on the link to purchase.

CTEK MXS 5.0 (Any battery charger will suffice)

Connect your choice of battery charger and ensure that the car is charged and continually charging to avoid power loss. Connect the K+DCAN cable and USB cable to your phone, the MHD application should open automatically.

Select the "Backup the ECU" option to create a backup just in case you lose power during the flashing process. Once this has completed, proceed to purchasing the required MAP for your car.

Switch your phone to airplane mode and select Stage 1 or the MAP you just purchased and hit the "Full Write" option. As per the instructions on screen, the write process will take anywhere between 30-45 minutes. During the process your phone will keep you up to date with the approximate time remaining and you may see some dash lights and alarms flicker on and off.

Once the flash is complete as displayed on your phone, turn off the ignition and disconnect the K+DCAN cable from the car. Wait 5 minutes before starting your car, the flash should now be enabled. Enjoy!
